We always stress proper maintenance of AC units in Chippewa Falls, and a Freon leak needs addressing as soon as you find it. If a refrigerant leak remains for a significant period of time, it could damage an air conditioner beyond repair. An AC Freon leak requires a major repair from a trained expert. At North Country Electric Service, our technicians are more than capable of performing any refrigerant leak repair you may need.
AC units use Freon like your car uses oil. It isn’t supposed to burn up in the engine; it is a type of refrigerant that provides a cooling source for the air in your home. As air flows through your AC unit, the Freon-carrying coils cool it down, sending cool air blowing through your house.
Your air conditioner should not be using up the refrigerant in its system. It contains a finite amount of Freon, and while it can run low over many years, it should not be leaking. If your air conditioner is leaking Freon, it will show at least one of the following signs:
No cold air. If you have warm air coming through the vents from your AC unit when you didn’t before, you have a leak.
High indoor humidity levels. Cooling air removes humidity as it enters the home. A lack of refrigerant keeps the humid air inside your home.
Hissing sounds. A Freon leak will cause your AC to make a hissing sound when it’s turned off.
Your AC is constantly running. If it takes your AC unit longer to turn off or a much longer time to cool down your house, it is leaking refrigerant. This longer run time will cause your power bill to rise significantly.
If your system leaks Freon even when the AC is off, it can cause lasting damage to your unit. While struggling to cool the air does put a strain on the unit and lowers its lifespan, the damage goes much deeper. The compressor pumps the Freon through the AC unit to help remove heat from the system and cool your air. Without any refrigerant, the compressor will overheat or completely burn up. Replacing an overheated compressor is challenging and expensive, and it is often cheaper to replace the entire unit than to replace the compressor. A refrigerant leak repair is more reasonable than both.
A refrigerant leak doesn’t just appear. Usually, it stems from some damage done to the lines carrying the Freon throughout your system. Many things can cause damage to the lines of your AC unit, including:
External factors can cause damage. Two small lines are usually exposed and can be broken or bent by anything moving fast enough to warp them, such as flying debris or running pets.
Poor installation can cause damage. When something isn’t connected correctly, regular use can cause a line to loosen, leading to small leaks over time.
Factory defects can cause damage. Even designers make mistakes on AC Units, and these mistakes can often wreak havoc on a refrigerant system. Luckily, a factory recall may cover these repairs.
It can be hard to notice the signs of a leak at first, but they only worsen over time. Our certified technicians can diagnose and repair any leak they find in your AC system. Call North Country Electric Service today at (715) 861-7138 for emergency repairs.
